Mr. Parr was quoted in an edition of the Financial Management Magazine, 2005 as saying that trying to do business in Japan was like 'walking through treacle'.

"Cross Culture Training's Japan tutorial is ideal for the western businessperson who has a hectic schedule and wants to maximise their impact in their dealings with the Japanese. Such people can use the tutorial even enroute to Japan - on the plane, in the taxi, wherever. It provides a good overview on how to behave, and also includes some language elements which the travelling professional will certainly find particularly useful. It is always courteous to now how to say a few basic words in the native tongue of the country you are visiting. In my travels Worldwide, I have found that even that simple level of effort and knowledge relating to the culture counts for a huge amount."

“In 2005 I was one of two people selected to travel from our company’s offices in New York to our company’s offices in Tokyo. Our task was to give four groups of Japanese clients (all from different companies) a presentation / workshop on a new interconnectivity software product. It was my first time, so I was excited but anxious about the upcoming visit. Although we had received a cursory briefing from our employer, I felt that additional training would be beneficial. The tutorial from Cross Culture Training was very, very helpful. Some aspects of the course had seemed almost exaggerated, e.g. the meticulous Japanese politeness, etc. But I was surprised to find that everything I’d learned from the training, I really experienced during my trip and was able to put to good use! It was all very relevant and applicable - even in such a modern Japanese business environment. Everyone bowed across the board and the various levels of bowing according to rank were used.

As each set of clients arrived from each different company, we greeted them, gave our three hour presentation, followed by a questions and answers session. We did that four times and then the last group spontaneously invited us to dinner. So here again I got to see how relevant the socialising aspect of the training tutorial was: not pouring your own drink, always pouring for the others first etc. Our trip was successful and may result in further trips. Based on what I had learned, I felt I had the tools to be far better prepared and far more effective both with our Japanese colleagues and with their Japanese clients.”

“We had a new initiative to encourage business development in foreign markets and especially those with strong economic growth. Asia and particularly Japan was atop that list and we needed to verse our sales team to communicate properly and respectfully within a culture as celebrated and revered as Japan. In order to do this we needed to be trained and schooled on the appropriate business acumen and cultural nuances in professional and social settings.

To answer this question we turned to Cross Culture Training for a tutorial and training on how to do business in Japan and treat each business relationship with care and respect. This gave our sales associates the confidence and knowledge that they needed to satisfy their objectives and gave us a leg up on our competition by enabling our operation in such an important economic and cultural market.

To this day I’ve recommended the Cross Culture Training course to many colleagues and clients who have the need to understand the complex inner-workings of the Japanese culture and they have benefited immensely, in turn praising me for the good reference.

I highly recommend this program to anyone personal or professional wanting a better understanding of the Japanese culture. I’m constantly revisiting it for reminders and pointers and it’s paved a successful path for our future in Japan!

Thanks to all the development team that helped to make this program…It has been a life saver!”
